Tribute to World War I Veteran, Mr. Barney Ryan
*A Pause and Special Mention for a World War I Hero - Mr Barney Ryan from
Ardfinnan, County Tipperary, Ireland. Gone but never forgotten.
There is not a man in Ireland that could shine his shoes.
My grandmother, the late Bridget "Bridie" Mahoney, loved to shop on Main Street, Ardfinnan, surrounded by her very large and adoring family. God rest your soul Mama. We love you and miss you, but we know you are watching over us. The late Mr. Barney Ryan, my Dada, whose home I grew up in and who put many a plate of food on the table and a pint on the counter for many a man in Ardfinnan and elsewhere in the counties. He was a "Rover" at the towns' fairs and provided manpower for the farmers to sell and move their cattle and other livestock. He would meet the farmers at dawn in town and they would tell him how many men they needed and where they wanted the livestock delivered in the counties.
Barney would go to the local bars or the fairs and get men who needed to work that day. When livestock was sold at the fairs in the various towns, Barney and his boys would deliver the livestock to their destination around the counties. The farmers would then pay him and he would pay his men. Barney enjoyed having a pint with the men after work and he loved to bet the horses. There is not a race track in Ireland that he has not frequented. He knew his game and made some good money playing. Let's face it, Barney was an all around winner at everything. Most of all, he loved to come home at night and have dinner with Bridie and the family. He was also a great gardener. He had a prize garden and orchard on the property. We never wanted for anything fresh and wholesome to eat. He was a great dad and equally great grand dad.
I can still see Barney now, sitting and eating his dinner at the table while he told stories about the day's events. If he had a few drinks he would skip daily stories and talk about his battles in the trenches in France during World War I. He spoke about his friends and fellow soldiers. He saw many of them killed or maimed. These men were warriors from around the world most of whom would never return to their families again. He was a very handsome young man when he went to war, and he came back handsome but injured and had many visiable scars and wounds. Many of those fine soldiers and war heroes from Ireland fought alongside the French and Americans and other states, did not get the respect and recognition they deserved when they returned home. They had saved the free world and kicked the Nazi butts back to the River Rhine. The Allies were victorious thanks to men like Barney Ryan.
Meanwhile, many men remained at home and drank in the pubs with the Germans who were on R&R during the war? Why? Ireland has always remained neutral during these major world wars. For those who did not fight it was business as usual. However, Irish men have always volunteered to join the wars by fighting in Irish brigades in foreign armies around the world. Barney and his commrades from Ireland, and all over the world for that matter, had to go home as international war heroes and start from nothing to make a life for themselves and their families. In other words the country, Ireland, said "Good Luck and Thanks." Ireland was neutral so it had no obligation to recognize their valiant acts to protect world freedom abroad. How soon the countries and people forget the trauma and sacrafices a soldier experiences in war, and its lasting affect on life, limb, and family. Barney tasted victory over a deadly enemy, the Germans. Hitler was a corporal in the German army and fought against Barney and his commarades in the trenches in France. Hitler got the iron cross for transporting messages back and forth in the trenches and taking on extra risk? The Germans came to fight another day in World War II, headed by the none other than Hitler, who had knived his way to the top of the German political system and Nazi Party from the trenches of France. The Germans were again defeated by the Allied Troops. God bless all the veterans and the fighting men around the world who have fought, and are still fighting today in Iraq and Iran to protect our freedom. We are all free to go about our daily lives in freedom and
protected from those who might harm us.
Barney was a great soldier. When he came home he proceeded to keep the wolfs from his door, and from many a man's door in the county and beyond by providing much needed jobs on a daily basis. He worked from dawn until dusk to keep him and his men with food, shelter, and spirit. He became the finest "Rover in County Tipperary and throughout all the counties in Ireland. He was a strong man with a heart of gold. He did his family and community proud. We are all grateful and are here because of your great spirit. Gone but never forgotten. Dada, I love you and miss you dearly. You are my hero. Barney's favorite bar in Ardfinnan was Leitia's on Main Street. In Cahir
he loved the bar in Chair House Hotel.

1. A safe and effective public transportation system for Irish citizens and tourists.
(Driving a car to Tesco to get a gallon of milk is not public transportation-it's stupid).
We need to invest in an effective fast train and bus system. We need to develop a
mass transit system to get traffic(cars) off the country roads. This would put a dent
in the death toll on our roads. It would also cut down on the growing population of
misfortunates who survive and are disabled from injuries for the rest of their lives.
Not to mention the heartache and financial problems their demiss causes the
surviving families.
2. A no tolerance law for people who drink and drive. A car is a lethal weapon when
put in the wrong hands. Please, do not drink and drive. Do not allow your loved
ones to drink and drive. We are just losing too many loved ones on the road.
Friends do not let friends drive drunk.
3. We need a strong law that will give drug dealers and carriers a mandatory
jail sentence when arrested and found guilty of drug dealing in Ireland.
Drugs will destroy our youth and culture and, therefore, our future as a people.
People entering Ireland via any route or port of entry should be searched for
illegal substances period. This is a no brainer. Every country in the world has
has this procedure in place. Why not Ireland? We have to get serious for our
youth's sake. Demand these laws from your local, county, and national
representatives today.
4. Cut down on the rising violence in the country. Much of this is related to drugs
and alcohol. Individuals who drive drunk or commit criminal acts under the
influence should have to go to a mandatory program to change their behavior.
Immigrants who do any or all of the above acts should be deported to their
own country. People who constantly commit violence and crimes belong in
jail until they get the message. They are a danger to themselves and the
general public. If there are no consequences to the bad behavior why should
such individuals change their behavior? Fight for serious changes in the law
today to protect you and your family and friends.
